Flying to Ireland
Aer Lingus has daily flights direct from Boston to Shannon Airport, which is an hour from the house.
Getting from Shannon to the House
Our favorite car rental is in Ennis. He can meet you at the airport to drive you the twenty minutes to his office in Ennis. From there it’s about 40 minutes to the house.
Getting picked up at Shannon is good way to get used to the different driving conditions in Ireland before you start driving yourself.
This link contains a good guide to driving in Ireland for Americans. Also see our tips for using your iPhone in Ireland and at the house
Places of business and houses in Ireland each have what’s called an Eircode (pronounced “air code”). The best way to get directions to the house from wherever you are in Ireland is to put the Eircode into your map app on your iPhone.
The Last Mile
When you turn off of the coastal road and up into the country side, you will pass several driveways on the left. We are off of the first street (lane) that appears on your left. It’s hard to spot until you are right there on it. There are walls on either side.
Continue down that lane over a cattle grate. You will see a traditional-looking cottage with red shutters on your right; that is our next-door neighbor. Take the immediate right after his house; that is our driveway. Note that the lane continues on in front of our house. If you follow it you will soon end up in our other neighbor’s cow pasture, which means you have gone too far.
On Arrival
You can park behind the house and unless you are in a wheelchair, you can go in the back door, which is the usual means of entry because the house is protected from the wind off of the Atlantic on that side. There is an exterior door into the mudroom and an interior door into the living area of the house. Both of them have locks. The one key works in both the exterior doors and this interior door.
